John Wayne in a publicity still for one of Howard Hawks’ masterpieces, Rio Bravo (1959).  John hadn’t made a western since The Searchers (1956) and his films since then were not successful.  Hawks had not made a western since Red River (1948), also with John Wayne, and Hawks’ previous film, Land of the Pharaohs, was not successful either, so the timing was right for another western.
