John Wayne and Robert MItchum in a scene from El Dorado (1966).  Pairing John Wayne with another strong male, Howard Hawks returned to form, after the failure of Red Line 7000,   Previously Hawks paired Wayne with Montgomery Clift in Red River, and Dean Martin in Rio Bravo.    While El Dorado is not another Hawks masterpiece, it is certainly “classic” in the strictest sense.
