Land of the Pharaohs

Howard Hawks filmed Land of the Pharaohs (1955) in Egypt.  He was disappointed that it didn’t turn out so good.  He admitted to having trouble with unlikeable characters and their dialogue, even though he had help from William Faulkner.  Hawks took four years off, the longest break in his film career, before rebounding with another blockbuster hit, Rio Bravo (1959).  While it’s true that Land of the Pharaohs is one of Hawks’ four weak films, the action highlights are terrific.
