El Dorado

John Wayne in a classic pose for El Dorado (1966).  Filming was completed in Feb 1966 and it had its premiere in Japan in Dec 1966 as Paramount Studios held it up in the USA so it wouldn’t compete with Nevada Smith, another of their westerns, starring a more contemporary star Steve McQueen.    El Dorado was finally shown in America in June 1967.

Michele Carey as Joey MacDonald in a publicity photo for El Dorado (1966).  When it was first released, critics widely panned it as old fashioned, although it was a hit with audiences and a money maker for the studio, and the film is now widely praised.  While it is not the masterpiece of Hawks’ other westerns Red River and Rio Bravo, it is still a superior entertainment and one of Hawks’ many career highlights.

John Wayne in an autographed publicity still for El Dorado (1966) with Michele Carey as Joey.  Michele was a worthy Hawksian female but it didn’t lead to anything else of note in her career.  She had 38 acting credits from 1964 to 1988 with her only other notable film Live a Little, Love a Little, one of Elvis Presley’s bottom of the barrel musicals.  She was most often seen on tv on series such as Mission Impossible, Starsky and Hutch and The Fall Guy.

Robert Mitchum as Sheriff JP Harrah in a publicity still for El Dorado (1966).  The bathtub scene was Mitchum’s idea and was great fun to film with many laughs and smiles on set.
